"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." — Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
Jesus said this in the Sermon on the Mount — not as flattery, but as a function. Salt in the ancient world was for preservation and flavour. To be the salt of the earth wasn’t a compliment about being nice. It was a description of purpose: a people set apart to preserve what is good and bring out the truth in the world around them.
The warning in verse 13 is serious. Salt that has lost its saltiness can’t be restored. The call is to remain distinct — not to blend in until there’s nothing left that makes the difference.
